Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
English Learning Support Assistants (ELSAs) are valued members of our English Department. They work alongside subject teachers to ensure that students’ learning needs are met and that every student can access the curriculum fully. While specific students may be the focus, ELSAs support learning across the class and collaborate with the Learning Support Department to assist children with additional needs.
This is a dynamic and rewarding role that involves:
• Building caring, nurturing relationships with students
• Establishing effective partnerships with class and subject teachers
• Communicating professionally with parents and staff
• Developing an understanding of multiple curriculum areas
• Being aware of individual learning needs and adapting support accordingly
Key Responsibilities
ELSAs assist teachers in meeting students’ needs by:
• Attending all lessons punctually and participating fully as directed by the EAL Coordinator or class teacher
• Reviewing lesson plans and adapting activities where needed
• Using communicative techniques to clarify language and content
• Supporting reading, writing, and comprehension tasks
• Encouraging positive behaviour and student interactions
• Promoting student independence and responsibility for learning
• Liaising with teachers on student progress
• Planning and leading small-group interventions
• Assisting during school trips, events, and activities
• Contributing to departmental projects and displays
Who We’re Looking For
• Proficient in English (CEFR Level C1 / IELTS Band 6.5+ or equivalent)
• Experience teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL)
• Understanding of phonics and the Letters and Sounds framework
• Experience supporting students with learning differences such as ADHD, dyslexia, or mild autism
