The Role
As School Caretaker, you will be central to keeping our school safe, well-maintained and running smoothly each day. Reporting to the Principal, you will take responsibility for the upkeep of our buildings and facilities, support health and safety procedures, carry out maintenance and minor repair work, and provide first-line IT and technical support alongside the IT Manager.
This is a hands-on, varied role that calls for someone who is reliable, practical and takes genuine pride in a well-run environment. You will work closely with colleagues across the school, from the Principal and Heads of Primary and Secondary to cleaning and maintenance staff, always with student safety and wellbeing as the priority.
Key Responsibilities
Health, safety and security
- Assist the Facilities Manager with health and safety management, including emergency evacuation procedures
- Support risk assessment processes and hazard identification across the school site and wider environment
- Check heating, cooling, security and fire protection systems in line with regulations
- Challenge unknown visitors or any suspect persons in the school grounds or buildings
- Report health and safety risks and hazards to the line manager promptly, ensuring they are addressed appropriately
- Supervise contractors and workers on site during any works undertaken
Maintenance and repair
- Carry out daily checks of all doors and fire exits
- Inspect fire equipment, school apparatus and building fabric regularly, repairing damage where appropriate
- Ensure that any repairs needed in the grounds or within the school are dealt with promptly
- Move and store furniture, materials and equipment as required
- Contribute to ongoing improvements to the interior appearance of the school
- Use initiative to address safety or cleanliness issues that fall outside the scope of routine tasks
IT and technical support
- Provide technical support on software, including Windows 10, MS Office 365, iOS and the school's Management Information System
- Support hardware, including PCs, audio/visual equipment, iPads, desk phones and printers
- Assist with iPad and PC deployment
- Troubleshoot Wi-Fi and network issues
- Manage desk moves and cable organisation
- Log and manage support requests using the school's helpdesk ticketing system
General
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Facilities Manager or IT Manager
- Check, mark and catalogue equipment and materials as appropriate

- Experience in a customer-facing or service-oriented role
- Strong communication skills, written and spoken, with people at all levels
- Knowledge of local health and occupational safety requirements

Desirable
- Third-level technical qualification
- Experience with building and facilities maintenance
- Experience troubleshooting Windows 10 and Office 365 issues
- Understanding of IT security and networking
- Ability to support IT hardware including PCs, iPads, printers and audio/visual setups
- Knowledge of fire protection, mechanical and electrical building systems
- Knowledge of cleaning standards and COSHH regulations
- A strong attendance and punctuality record
