Job Description

Purpose

The Elementary School Counselor promotes student well-being through a comprehensive counseling program aligned with the school’s mission and IB philosophy. Working collaboratively with students, teachers, administrators, and families, the Counselor provides academic, emotional, and behavioral support, facilitates transitions, promotes social-emotional development, and responds to individual and group needs through prevention, intervention, and guidance strategies.

Reports to:  Elementary Principal

Key Responsibilities

Student Support and Guidance

  • Provide individual and small-group counseling for students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.

  • Deliver classroom guidance lessons that promote SEL skills, empathy, conflict resolution, decision-making, and diversity awareness.

  • Support the development of students’ self-esteem, responsibility, and interpersonal skills.

  • Facilitate conflict resolution and peer mediation as appropriate.

  • Conduct systematic observations and develop intervention strategies with staff and parents.

  • Address bullying concerns through preventive education and follow-up.

Collaboration and Consultation

  • Collaborate with teachers and the leadership team to support classroom management and inclusive practices.

  • Consult with parents and external professionals to provide consistent support for students.

  • Participate in student support and RTI meetings; advocate for students during IEP and team discussions.

  • Refer students to external professionals as needed and maintain communication for follow-up.

Program Implementation

  • Design and implement a comprehensive counseling program that addresses school-wide goals and student needs.

  • Participate in and lead student well-being initiatives, including transitions and orientation activities.

  • Organize and facilitate group guidance sessions for elementary students monthly.

Administrative and Ethical Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records.

  • Provide support during school-wide assessments or audits related to student well-being.

  • Contribute to the development of school policies related to safeguarding and student welfare.

  • Ensure compliance with ethical and professional standards in school counseling.

Required Skills/Abilities

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or Education.

  • Valid Panamanian professional license (idoneidad) to practice counseling
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, Educational Psychology, or a related field (required or in progress).

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a school counselor in an elementary or early childhood setting.

  • Familiarity with IB PYP, international or bilingual schools (preferred).

  • Knowledge of emotional and behavioral development in young children.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in English and Spanish.

  • Demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships with young children and families.

  • Strong organizational, time management, and documentation skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment.

  • Technological proficiency.
