The summer school was modelled on American summer camps, with ‘Counsellors’ who live with students, teach lessons and lead excursions and activities, providing a higher level of pastoral care, guidance, and friendship – giving students more than just ‘teachers’ and ‘activity leaders’ at a summer school. 

Working in summer schools is a rewarding experience for both students and staff, and Bucksmore aims to make our courses ones that our students never forget. The Bucksmore philosophy is for students to mix with their fellow students and staff wherever possible to make their time with us a rich and genuinely international cultural experience

Residential Activity Counsellor

 

Location: St. Hilda’s College, D’Overbroeck’s Colege, Oxford and King’s College London

 

Dates: 6th July- 5th August 2025

 

Bucksmore Activity Counsellors play an essential part in assisting the delivery of our academic programme as well as the activities programme, ensuring that students who attend our programmes have an unforgettable educational experience in a safe, caring environment. Engaging with students in all aspects of a course ensure that both students and staff make the most out of their time on a summer course. The activity programmes comprise of daytime and evening activities alongside full and half day trips to places of historical and cultural interest

 

This list summarises the key tasks of the role and is not a definitive list of all the tasks to be undertaken as those can be varied from time to time at the discretion of the Centre Manager or Operations Manager and Head Office Team. Bucksmore will exercise this right reasonably

Training and Health & Safety:

• Attend the staff induction and take part in all Health and Safety related training

• Attend the Welfare & Safeguarding induction both in pre-summer online inductions and in- person at the start of your contract, implement training into AC role

• Consult and understand the risk assessment for each activity and excursions AC is involved in

 

Activity & Excursion Programme:

• Assist with the planning, organising and implementing a range of appropriate activities during daytimes, afternoons and evenings

• Take responsibility for groups of students on excursions, including Study in Action excursions, ensuring you know the plans thoroughly to guide the students effectively

• Enthusiastically engage all students in joining in for the activity programme, and assisting with project preparation and presentation ensuring no one is left out

• Help promote the activity programme to students by displaying posters, visiting classes and speaking to students enthusiastically

 

Student Welfare & Supervision:

• Supervise students during meal times as per staff rota

• Where required assist and engage with student transfers to and from airports as directed by the Centre Manager

• Where required, as part of your rota, perform waking up duties and ‘lights out’ duties

• Ensure that all student welfare and safeguarding protocols are adhered to and followed

 

General:

• Attend staff meetings as required

• Respond to general emergencies at all times

• Maintain proper levels of student discipline, safety and welfare

• Carry out any other reasonable task assigned to you by a manager to meet the operational demands of a centre

• Assist the Management team with the set-up, shut-down, and day to day running of the centre

 

 

All applicants must be 18+ and have the eligibility to work in the UK prior to commencing employment. 

 

Remuneration 

Band A: £610.10 a week including holiday pay

Band B: £587.70 a week including holiday pay

Band C: £399.80 a week including holiday pay

The post holders’ responsibilities for safeguarding and welfare of the students for whom they are responsible and with whom they come into contact, will be to adhere to Bucksmore’s Child Protection Policy. You will be asked to provide the contact details of at least 2 referees. Referees will be asked specifically whether there is any reason that you should not be employed in situations where you have responsibility for under 18s. An enhanced DBS check.
