Head OF ENGLISH

The role:

As a Head of English your focus will be:

Strategic direction and operational excellence of English teaching and learning from KS3 through IGCSE to IBDP. This role is pivotal in ensuring outstanding academic outcomes while empowering every student to become a confident and proficient user of English.

 

As part of this the following are some key parts to the role:

Strategic Leadership:

  • To work with the secondary leadership team. Plus be a proactive member of middle leadership promoting a consistent, broad and balanced curriculum and creating an environment in which student needs are met through purposeful feedback and development of creativity, curiosity and consideration is embedded.  

Championing Excellence in Teaching & Learning:

  • To lead, manage, and support a team of English teachers through coaching, mentoring, and delivering high-impact professional development.
  • To quality assure teaching and learning within the department
  • To foster a culture of collaboration and shared best practice within the department and across other faculties.

 Whole-School Literacy & Academic English:

  • To champion and lead the school-wide literacy strategy, working collaboratively with all departments to elevate standards of confident English reading, writing, and speaking.
  • To develop and implement programmes that specifically support EAL and native speakers in mastering the academic English required for success in IGCSE and IBDP.

The Successful Candidate will possess:

  • Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, BEd; HDipEd  or equivalent).
  • Hold a current Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure for all countries lived in.
  • Compliance with visa requirements for working in China.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all pupils, and a willingness to undertake appropriate child protection training when required.
  • A proven track record of success of English teaching experience.
  • Experience of teaching IGCSE and IBDP English is highly preferable
