Head of Department (Physical Education)

To lead the Physical Education Department across the whole school, ensuring a high-quality curriculum offer for 3 to18 year olds. To collaborate with colleagues on the development of a contemporary, international PE curriculum which ensures great outcomes for all, supported by technology and strong teaching practice. To lead a vibrant, supportive department that inspires students to foster a love of the subject and becomes a model of good practice within the collaborative culture of the school.

Leadership

As a Leader you will:

  • Lead a modern, international department who create a culture of high-quality learning and teaching of PE
  • Have a vision and experience of curriculum development and model practice of PE learning for 3-18 year olds.
  • Set high expectations for the PE department, including Health and Safety policy and practice
  • Promote excellence, equality, collaboration and high expectations for students
  • Represent the school’s values in every interaction with students, parents and colleagues
  • Actively and enthusiastically contribute beyond the classroom in the wider context of the school community
  • Act as an advocate for the school in the wider community
  • Be an active member of the BIS Houston Leaders of Learning team

Teaching and Learning

As Head of PE, you will support your team by:

  • Setting high expectations for all students; inspiring, motivating and challenging them to achieve excellent progress and ambitious outcomes.

  • Having a well-developed, extensive knowledge of subject specialism and related pedagogy (including using Technology for Learning).

  • Having experience/knowledge of teaching iGCSE and International Bachelorette (IB)

  • Having experience/knowledge of the developmental stages from Early Years through to High school and how to create the best PE offering to match these age groups

  • Understanding, evaluating and tracking progress at all ages and how to feed this back to students and families

  • Creating a culture of learning which ensures an environment of respect and collaboration.

  • Leading by example both in the classroom and around the campus.

Key Elements of the Head of Department Role

As Head of PE you will:

  • Develop a curriculum that is aligned to the school’s curriculum and that engages students, based on best practice and that reflects our international community
  • Lead professional development for your department that aligns with your department development plan
  • Present progress data to SLT about the performance of key groups across the curriculum, including iGCSE and IB outcomes
  • Develop resources that meet the needs of the curriculum and enable high quality PE teaching
  • Develop interactive and contemporary learning spaces, which support students from Early Years through to High School
  • Line manage your team to ensure they are professionally developed, challenged and inspired to create the best offering possible to the students in their care
  • Implement high quality communication, behaviour management and timetabling systems which enable the department to function to a high standard
  • Ensure the learn to swim programme for Early Years and Primary is of the highest standard
  • Liaise with the Athletics Director to support competitive sports

Personal Specifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Teaching Qualification PGCE/QTS etc.
  • Minimum 2 years leadership experience in a school.
  • Experience of teaching Early Years, Primary and Secondary PE.
  • Strong proficiency with technology.
  • Good cross-cultural, interpersonal and communication skills to interact with diverse nationalities and cultures.
  • Excellent analytical skills – with the passion and drive to demonstrate and quantify success.
  • Excellent time management skills and flexibility in dealing with multi-functional tasks.
