About The Role

 

We are seeking an experienced full-time counsellor to work with students in across our  School

The school counsellor provides counselling services to individuals and groups of students in a safe and welcoming environment. The person in this position acts as a consultant to parents, teachers, and administrators. Some of the duties and support services that the counsellor is responsible for include:

  • Building  positive, warm and caring relationships with students, families, and colleagues throughout the school community;

  • Providing short-term individual and group counselling for students with social-emotional challenges, whether or not those challenges are clinically diagnosed;

  • Providing behaviour management assistance and crisis intervention when necessary;

  • Communicating with families about their children, both sharing accounts from school and listening to accounts from home;

  • Developing and maintaining a referral list of therapists and local resources for students who may need an assessment and/or long-term therapeutic support;

  • Communicating with therapists and other outside professionals about students;

  • Assisting in the collection and sending of evidence for social-emotional testing for outside professionals;

  • Actively participating in the Student Support Team meetings;

  • Problem-solving with teachers, parents, and outside professionals to develop appropriate supports for students with social-emotional challenges;

  • Developing and coordinating social and emotional learning plans with teachers;

  • Participating in parent-teacher conferences, as needed.

  • To engage the school community in workshops and training 

  • To help raise awareness and be an ambassador of mental well being across the school and community 

  • Support in safeguarding practices and child protection plans as needed 

 

Education and Experience 

 

  • A recognised qualification in Clinical or Counselling Psychology or related field; ideally post qualifying experience of at least 2 years 

  • Master degree preferred 

  • Experience of specialist psychotherapeutic assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature.

  • Have experience or understanding of the spectrum of special educational needs and understand the core principles of inclusion. 

  • Experience in working with  children or young people, ages 3-18

  • Experience, knowledge and confidence to work with families from a range of cultures 

  • Knowledge of current Child Protection practice, be able to support the child safeguarding practices and reviews in school. 

  • Experience of working in a school context with knowledge of education systems

  • Awareness of global diversity and Third Culture Identity 

  •  

Skills and Abilities  

  • Possess highly developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate in complex and sensitive situations

  • Excellent crisis response skills; able to remain calm and empathic in crisis or emotionally challenging situations 

  • Able to manage a varied and flexible caseload across a  phase (HS/PS)

  • To be able to supervise student internships 

  • Inspiring trust and confidence

  • Ability to work as an autonomous practitioner with an appropriate level of clinical and managerial supervision. 

  • To have a positive and solution-focused mindset 

  • To be able to work collaboratively with the counselling teams across the School 

  • To work in partnership with the Learning Support teams across the  School

  • To establish effective liaison with school staff with regards to student referral in respect of mental health and counselling issues and to support teaching staff in their pastoral role. 

  •  To develop and implement policies and procedures which govern the counselling service.  

  • To maintain appropriate records and to ensure confidentiality is maintained in all aspects of work.  

  • To establish, maintain and monitor appropriate administrative systems with regards to student referral.
