Learning Support Assistant
Duties & Responsibilities:
Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) are full-time members of the Learning Support Department. Their role is to work alongside specialist, classroom, and subject teachers, as well as therapists, to ensure that every student’s learning needs are met and that they can access mainstream curriculum activities where possible. LSAs collaborate closely with specialist teachers to ensure student programs are well-coordinated and that strategies are consistently applied to maximize student success.
In addition, LSAs are expected to engage in professional development opportunities and apply their learning to everyday classroom practice.
This is a demanding role that involves:
- Establishing a caring and nurturing relationship with students.
- Building effective working relationships with class and subject teachers.
- Developing professional relationships and maintaining effective communication with parents.
- Gaining a broad knowledge of different disabilities, learning difficulties, and curriculum areas.
- Being aware of individual student needs, using specific strategies, and anticipating their implications in various teaching and learning situations.
Qualifications:
Learning Support Assistants support teachers in meeting students’ needs by:
- Being punctual to all timetabled lessons and participating fully under the direction of the class teacher.
- Following strategies from Individual Plans to help students meet personalized goals.
- Adapting tasks and helping to prepare materials and resources.
- Differentiating language or reinforcing activities as needed.
- Clarifying or explaining content and instructions through visual, written, or oral support.
- Ensuring that students can use equipment correctly in a way that supports their learning.
- Facilitating positive behavior and interactions between students.
- Encouraging students to develop independence and take responsibility for their own learning where appropriate.
- Communicating closely with parents and taking guidance from specialist staff on the best ways to support families.
- Accompanying and assisting students and staff on community involvement experiences, school trips, work experiences, and whole-school activities such as cultural celebrations, productions, and inter-school events.
- Participating in other school duties and activities as directed by the Head of Phase or Head of School.
As well as possessing all the qualities and professional attributes required for a 1:1 Learning Support Assistant, this is a demanding and potentially exhausting role. Therefore, we require candidates who are:

- Willing to support students' personal care needs sensitively.
- Encouraging and motivating in their approach to student learning and development throughout the day.
