Primary Music Teacher
Bangkok, TH
St Andrews International School Bangkok is one of 88 schools in the Nord Anglia Education (NAE) family. We offer a British educational curriculum with an international perspective that begins in Nursery and leads up to IGCSE examinations in Year 11, and culminates with the International Baccalaureate Diploma after completing Year 13. We are an inclusive school that invites children from all backgrounds and abilities to participate in the educational offerings on our diverse campus.
Founded in 1997 on an attractive, conveniently located site, with excellent facilities and access to local transportation. Today we have more than 2,400 students over a Primary School and High School campus, representing some 68 nationalities ranging from Foundation Stage to Year 13. Our state-of-the-art High School campus (next to Ekkamai BTS) opened in August 2017 giving our students the benefit of world-class teaching and facilities.
As part of the NAE family of schools, we are delighted to be able to offer some unique collaborations with world-class establishments, including the Juilliard School of Performing Arts, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and UNICEF.
About the role
Music is a popular and well-established subject at St. Andrews, and we are looking for an experienced and inspiring teacher to join the team. The students are motivated and enthusiastic, enjoying a lively approach to the subject through a wide range of teaching and learning techniques. The ideal candidate will convey enthusiasm for the subject and contribute collaboratively in the continued development of both the curriculum from Early Years to Year 6 and a wide range of extra-curricular music activities. These include building on our growing orchestral and choral programmes and where appropriate our ‘Young Producers’ music tech and rock and pop projects. We are also a Musical Futures flagship school, hosting an annual conference for Music teachers at our High School Campus promoting inclusive, student-centred and informal learning approaches in music for all our learners. We are also active members of both the TISAC and FOBISIA networks, hosting and attending events regularly.
All students have specialist music lessons from the Early Years to Year 6. The children experience lessons which develop a number of skills; performing, perceptive listening, creating, reflecting and understanding theory. We also access the Juilliard - Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme, which introduces core works through inquiry-based activities. Alongside this curriculum, the children are able to participate in a wide and varied extra-curricular music programme which builds on and supports curriculum learning. All children at the Primary School receive one hour of class music and 30m of whole year group singing a week.
From Year 5 onwards, children choose and are loaned, either a violin or cello, a trumpet or trombone or a wind instrument (flute, saxophone or clarinet), with music lessons including instrumental instruction, ensemble practices and performances. The ability to offer one or more of these instruments, or other instruments within these families, and experience of whole class instrumental teaching and leading ensembles is advantageous. Choral experience and piano playing skills are also desirable.
At St Andrews, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive school, and we have an excellent reputation for supporting children with special educational needs. Experience of teaching children with dyslexia, mild autism, ADHD etc. would be very good prior experience for a teacher wishing to join our team. Our Mission Statement commits us to meet ‘all the needs of the individual learner’.
As well as their teaching, all music teachers are also expected to contribute positively to the school’s extra-curricular programme, offering activities that either support or extend the students’ learning in music.
