Position Summary / Job Goals:
The Athletic Strength Coach assists with all facets of athletic performance ranging from strength, conditioning, and flexibility to sports nutrition and the efficient implementation of performance technology. The coach will also support the Performance Education program designed to educate student-athletes on the lifestyle and demands placed on them as student-athletes. Extensive knowledge in these areas is essential.
Professionalism in working with coaches and high school–aged students is required, along with proficiency in common computer software and performance testing protocols. The Athletic Strength Coach works closely with the Athletics Department to support student-athlete development and overall athletic performance.
Qualifications / Training:
- Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree preferred)
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or equivalent certification required
- Must meet all background check and safeguarding requirements
- Compliance with visa requirements for working in Houston, Texas
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students and willingness to undertake appropriate child protection training when required
Experience / Knowledge:
- Two or more years of experience training large teams or athletic organizations
- Demonstrated knowledge of strength and conditioning principles including Olympic lifting, core lifts, and auxiliary movements
- Knowledge of injury prevention, mobility, and movement progression techniques
- Experience designing sport-specific programs and performance testing protocols
- Ability to motivate and cultivate student-athletes while supporting the athletic department’s mission
- Ability to maintain communication with coaches and athletics staff regarding training and performance

Reports to / Evaluated by:
Director of Athletics
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide input and support to the Department of Athletics
- Assist in all aspects of strength and conditioning training for assigned sports
- Design programs and testing protocols for various sports teams
- Assist non-athlete students in the development of fitness programs
- Maintain an open line of communication with members of the athletic department staff and sport coaches
- Maintain the upkeep and safety of the strength and performance training facility
- Instruct at least two sections of Physical Education courses
Operational Responsibilities Include:
- Articulate and demonstrate proper technique in all warm-up movements, Olympic lifts, and core lifts (squat, pressing, deadlift, and auxiliary movements)
- Maintain appropriate pace and tempo during team training sessions to ensure training efficiency and effectiveness
- Lead weekly staff training sessions to ensure proficiency in strength training exercises and movement progressions including prehabilitation, mobility, speed development, and multidirectional movement patterns
- Consistently deliver positive energy, motivation, and leadership to help student-athletes excel
- Maintain focus and professionalism while working in the training facility to ensure student-athlete safety at all times
Leadership Responsibilities Include:
- Assist in the development and supervision of the student athletic training aide program, including interviewing, training, and oversight of student aides
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics
