Job Description

  • You’ll explain ways that allow them to become better students academically and to prepare for their future.

  • A Village School High School Student College Counselor should be knowledgeable about not only his or her department and the curriculum developed there but about the school environment as a whole.  They should be able to provide information about special programs offered as well as the philosophy of the school itself.
  • A Village School High School Student College Counselor should be a proponent of the school and willing to talk about the school in a positive light to all constituents. 
  • A Village School High School Student College Counselor should work cooperatively and collectively with school Directors, Instructional Coach, Coordinators, Department Heads and other Teachers to ensure that instructional programs are coordinated and are administered uniformly and equitably in alignment with desired outcome.

  • Work in a team-oriented College Counseling environment to help guide students to appropriate fit/match of college. Manage approximately 50 day/residential students per grade level.
  • Know and understand graduation requirements to complete credit checks to ensure students have all necessary qualifications for graduation.
  • Know and understand admissions processes for US, UK, Canada and other international systems.
  • Attend local, state and National conference updates as needed to network with other admissions professionals and stay abreast of trends in college admissions. Attend College Fly Ins needed to understand complex admission requirements.
  • Familiarity with IB Diploma requirements and ability to assist 10th graders in course selection. Familiarity with additional diploma offerings and ability to assist 9th, 10th and new students in course selection.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups of parents and students to deliver timely college information at evening programs and coffees/teas.
  • Conduct small and large group guidance of students in grades 9-12 for college readiness.
  • Knowledge of Scoir and iSams as tools used for college planning is strongly preferred

Planning And Preparation

  • Proficient in writing letters of recommendation for seniors in the college application process, as well as other students for summer programs, internships, etc.
  • Understand the nuances and challenges of working with students from diverse backgrounds including international students and boarding students, especially when it comes to visas and standardized testing.

Professional and Personal Development

  • Act as a professional teammate, working productively with and respectfully towards their colleagues so that all feel valued, supported, and part of the team.
  • Seek to continually improve every year by being open to coaching and engaging in other professional development opportunities in order to improve outcomes for their students and illustrate that teachers are also lifelong learners.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Bachelor’s Degree, required, Master’s preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in university admissions and/or college counseling
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint for producing reports and presentations.
  • Good cross-cultural, interpersonal and communication skills to interact with diverse nationalities and cultures.
  • Excellent analytical skills – with the passion and drive to demonstrate and quantify success.
  • Results orientated with the ability to consistently map efforts against identified KPIs.
  • Excellent time management skills and flexibility in dealing with multi-functional tasks.
  • You’d like to work in a purpose-led sector.
