Position Summary / Job Goals:

 

The Substitute Teacher provides instructional and classroom support in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The Substitute Teacher is responsible for maintaining a safe, positive, and productive learning environment while implementing lesson plans, supervising students, and supporting the mission and values of The Village School. Substitute Teachers may be assigned to Lower School, Middle School, or High School classrooms and must demonstrate flexibility in supporting various grade levels, subject areas, and campus needs.

Qualifications / Training:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment requirements, including criminal background screening and any required drug screening.
  • Completion of all required compliance training, including Texas Mandatory Reporter Training and safeguarding training.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Ability to meet all onboarding and employment requirements established by The Village School.
  • Must maintain compliance with all school policies, procedures, and training requirements throughout employment.

Experience / Knowledge:

 

  • Previous experience working with children or adolescents in an educational, childcare, coaching, mentoring, camp, or related setting preferred.
  • Understanding of classroom management techniques and student supervision practices.
  • Ability to follow written lesson plans and instructions provided by the classroom teacher.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new classroom environments and situations.
  • Basic proficiency with technology, email, and school communication systems.
  • Knowledge of best practices related to student safety, supervision, and confidentiality.

Reports to / Evaluated by:

 

  • Reports directly to the Human Resources Department.
  • Performance is monitored and evaluated by the Human Resources Department based on assignment fulfillment, reliability, professionalism, compliance, and feedback from school administrators and staff.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

  • Report to assigned campus location on time and prepared to fulfill substitute assignments.
  • Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the classroom teacher.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful classroom environment.
  • Supervise students during instructional periods, transitions, lunch, recess, and other assigned duties.
  • Enforce school policies, procedures, and student conduct expectations.
  • Take attendance and maintain accurate records as required.
  • Communicate significant student concerns, behavioral issues, or emergencies to the appropriate school administrator.
  • Leave notes regarding classroom activities, student progress, and any issues encountered during the assignment.
  • Coordinate substitute assignments through the school's designated communication channels and assigned substitute coordinators.
  • Respond promptly to assignment requests and maintain accurate availability information with Human Resources.
  • Maintain regular communication with Human Resources regarding availability, assignment acceptance, and employment status.
  • Protect the confidentiality of student, employee, and school information.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and serve as a positive representative of The Village School.
  • Be available to accept assignments on an as-needed basis and maintain flexibility to work across multiple divisions, grade levels, and subject areas.
  • Comply with all school safety, security, and safeguarding requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Human Resources consistent with the responsibilities of a substitute teacher.
