Secondary School - Design Teacher

The Visual Arts and Design Thinking Department (VADT) at the British International School of Houston includes specialist teachers in Visual Arts, Design Technology, Ceramics and Computer Science. The Secondary Visual Arts and Design department provides learning for students aged 11 to 18 years old. We offer qualitfications in the following:

  • iGCSE Fine Art, 3D Design and Computer Science
  • BTEC in Art and Design – Ceramics and Textiles endorsement
  • IBDP in Visual Arts, Design Technology and Computer Science

Due to the growth of the school, we seek to employ an experienced Design Teacher to work with students in both the Middle and High School phases.

Teaching and Learning
  • Has experience and the skills to deliver high quality teaching of Design Technology across the age ranges.
  • Engages and challenges student learning through questioning and discussion techniques and proven-pedagogical strategies.
  • Creates a culture of learning and manages student behaviour to ensure an environment of respect and collaboration.
  • Participates in all aspects of our learning programme, in line with school policy that assist in growing the school and are linked to the agreed learning programme
Planning and Preparation
  • Sets clear learning intentions and educational outcomes.
  • Designs lesson plans, activities and assessments aligned to the school’s curriculum and engages students.
  • Conceptualises, plans and teaches well-structured lessons and programmes that engage, inspire and stretch students; encouraging them to be ambitious 

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Teaching Qualification (PGCE, Qualified Teacher Status)

  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience in a Design subject - Resistant Materials, Woodwork or Ceramics would be beneficial.

  • Experience using Adobe creative suite software and/or CAD.

  • Good cross-cultural, interpersonal and communication skills to interact with diverse nationalities and cultures

  • Excellent analytical skills - with the passion and drive to demonstrate and quantify success

  • Excellent time management skills and flexibility in dealing with multi-functional tasks.
